Could I use charcoal in a Char-Broil Patio grill?

I bought it used, and the previous owner had charcoal pieces under the electric part of the grill. I don’t know if he used charcoal and electricity at the same time or just the charcoal. I know that charcoal gives more flavor, so can I use it in conjunction with the electric grill?
or maybe the chared remains were ceramic briquettes or lava rocks?? im not sure…
or Wood Chips?
