Is it legal in any state (including California, where I live) not to allow a tenant to cook in your apartment?

Many of the ads on partner Room on craigslist say cooking * light * or just say that a person can not cook and prepare food at home at all .. Is it legal for homeowners not allow this .. or to prohibit the use of the kitchen or standard equipment like a refrigerator or stove?

I've never heard of anything so stupid in my life! While there is a kitchen what is the problem of the kitchen? Unless your just renting a room in a house that someone is the owner and the owners do not want their tenants to use their kitchen.
