is Etsy.com good for selling things?
i want to sell stuff i make like blank hardcover books, coin purses, reconstructed tops (mostly punk style), sleep masks, mix cds with decorated covers, and scarves.
do you think that stuff would sell good?
If you’ve used Etsy or do use it, how well does it work for you?
Step one is to get a business ID or tax ID. Even if you’re just starting out or plan on doing this part time, check with your state and get set up as a sole proprietor(usually free or very inexpensive).
Like any other on-line store, it works best the more you promote it. If you get a booth at a craft fair, bazaar or flea market, make sure you have plenty of cards or flyers to hand out and chat up every person that looks even remotely interested in your wares. Put ads on Craigslist, local bulletin boards(both cork and on-line), and invite everyone you know to bring friends for a “trunk show”.
An alternative to Etsy is Ecrater.com. I use Ecrater because it’s totally free. Ebay, Etsy and other sites charge you to post items, add pictures, and you have to pay when a sale is made. On Ecrater, the only fee I pay is when a sale is made via PayPal. It’s super easy to get started, and they have a great community board for newbies. There’s no limit to how many items you can post, and you can load up to 10 pictures of each item. I have 2 stores there, one for my jewelry and one for collectibles, books, etc. There are several vendors with 4 or more stores! To get a feel for the success of different sites, start looking at people’s stores. There’s usually a place that shows how many sales they’ve made, sometimes tied to their satisfaction rating.
All of your stuff sounds really cool, but I’d stay away from the pre-made mix CDs- the last thing you need is ASCAP breathing down your neck!
