How can I tell how full a small camping propane tank is?
A few questions: 1) Does a small propane tank for camping ever go bad/become unsafe from being unused for years? 2) If the tank is too old, how do I dispose of it properly? and 3) Once I identify a tank as being safe, how can I tell how full the tank is? Thank you!
P.S. This is my first time on Yahoo! Answers. If I should separate my questions in the future or could otherwise be a better Yahoo! citizen, please advise!
As most have said, you can expose the tank to a quick temperature change,(but not too extreme) and by feel and sometimes by condensation, you can tell how much propane is left. You can also shake it. If you feel the liquid slosh around inside, it’s about 1/2 full. If not it’s either full or empty. You can tell by the weight. You can also but a stick on strip that shows how much is left. They work on the principle of the different temperature in the tank.
Unless it’s rusty, the tank is good. They don’t go bad. It’s the refillable tanks that need to be watched. BUT PLEASE, do NOT just throw them in the garbage!!! Even empty ones contain some propane and these can explode under heat or pressure. Most landfills have a specific dropoff for propane tanks.
